SF Marketing Leads the way with LED Architectural Lighting Installations

August 17, 2010 – SF Marketing leads the way with a first of its kind custom LED architectural installation project in collaboration with Galerie Audio Video by Duocom at the new Calao Restaurant in Quebec City. The Calao Restaurant project is a first in its industry in Canada to implement 100% LED Illumination in its design with the use of Alkalite LED lighting distributed by SF Marketing. LED lighting technology presents a new and exciting design option and its benefits go beyond aesthetic appeal as it is energy efficient and it has a very positive impact on the environment.

The Calao restaurant boasts an LED lighting system that consumes a third of the power when compared to a typical establishment of its sort, making the life-cycle cost very attractive and sustainable. The restaurant was built in a LEED building (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which signifies that it has to meet sustainable building and development practices and standards through its creation and implementation. Thus the wattage of lighting had to be contained close to 1.1W per square foot. In this case, the LED installation goes beyond efficiency and plays an integral role in the visual design and spectacular lighting scheme.

The Calao Restaurant serves Asian Gastronomy inspired from the south peninsula including Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam to the northern mainland of China, Japan and Korea. Designer Dimitri Smolens from DSD Groupe Design (Montreal, Quebec) and his team’s artistic vision was to create a unique, sleek ambience to highlight each of the Asian revered elements of water, fire, earth, wood and metal which each represent an area of the restaurant.

¨The expertise of lighting consultant Sam Sorce at Galerie Audio Video and Nick Martino at SF Marketing were instrumental in the selection of the appropriate Alkalite products, which allowed us to produce the various atmospheres to showcase each area which was dependant on lighting levels, moods and the specific colour temperature of 3200 Kelvin degrees¨, explains Designer Dimitri Smolens.

To achieve these effects, an array of Alkalite products controlled via DMX, such as, the LED DECO 3 & 12 Recess Series and Color Modules Series were featured in the architectural installation. More precisely, 400 Deco Series fixtures were customized from their standard RGB (red, green, blue) to WWA (white, white, amber) and 800 RGB and WAB Color Module Strips were installed to illuminate and accent the interior façade of the restaurant, the bar from above and below and the general restaurant spaces. The result is a fully controllable and exciting visual environment that is state-of-the-art and eco-friendly.
