QSC KW series builds on 'K' platform

BUT IN SUPER LIGHT AND COMPACT BIRCH ENCLOSURE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Montreal, QC, July 12th, 2010
Following the successful launch of their powered K Series last year, QSC have gone a step further with the introduction of the KW Series. Building on the same successful platform as the ABS-molded K Series (which it is designed to complement), it has been engineered to produce the same outstanding performance - but this time in a second generation wooden enclosure. The form factor is consequently more compact and substantially lighter than previous birch enclosure designs.
Product Highlights
The KW Series represents the next evolution in wood enclosure loudspeakers, incorporating all the groundbreaking electronic attributes of the K Series.
Packaged into the new, second generation Baltic birch design will be the same incredible 1000W of Class D power modules (2 x 500W), 1.75-inch high output HF device (in the full-range models) and extensive DSP featured in the K Series, along with all QSC's patented technologies designed to fully-optimize the system.
The KW Series comprises four models - the KW122 (12-inch, 2-way multipurpose loudspeaker), KW152 (15-inch, 2-way trapezoidal loudspeaker), KW153 (15-inch, 3-way trapezoidal loudspeaker) and KW181 (18-inch subwoofer).
In addition to the 1000W of Class D power, this pioneering system incorporates DEEPT and Intrinsic CorrectionT as performance enhancers into the DSP, while DMTT (Directivity Matched Transition) ensures uniform coverage across the entire sound field. In addition, the KW Series features GuardRailT protection, first introduced on QSC's GX Series amplifiers, which prevents the amplifier module from unnatural and destructive clipping, while the full-range models also include a four-position Mic/Line gain switch.
The construction of these rugged, texture-painted birch enclosures has also been carefully conceived, with tour grade 16-gauge steel grilles, comfortable ergonomic handles, and 35mm pole sockets with Tilt-DirectT (on the KW122 and KW152 models). New EAW KF740 Line Arrays Deployed By Norwest Productions For Playground Weekender Music Festival

Norwest Productions, Australia’s largest audio services provider, deployed new EAW KF740 line arrays for one of the main stages featuring artists such as Bjorn Again and Orbital at the Playground Weekender Music Festival.
The system deployed by Norwest Productions was headed by 24 high-output, 3-way KF740 modules flown in two arrays (each with 12 modules) on either side of the stage.
The arrays were augmented with eight EAW SB1002 dual-18 and 16 EAW SB1000z large-format subwoofers, as well as four EAW KF650z compact arry loudspeakers offering 60-degree horizontal dispersion for front fill. The Norwest crew had the entire system flown in under an hour.
“One of the advantages of using this array is that it isn’t as heavy as some other arrays, and still packs a lot of punch,” observes Scott Harrison, Audio Systems Engineer at Norwest Productions. “As we were hanging [the system off] of the stage roof superstructure, weight was very important.
“Given the short time frame we had to get the PA in the air, the easy rigging was a great advantage. With input from EAW’s Resolution software, we got a hang that looked like what the computer said it should, and covered all the area it needed to. From start to finish we had both of our 12-box hangs flown in under an hour. We were also able to keep the rig down to one amp rack per side, plus a sub rack,” Harrison adds.
Mixers and technicians who worked that stage at Playground Weekender offered positive comments. “All the engineers who came to mix were impressed with the sound of the PA,” notes Harrison. “In particular, I had comments about how even the sound was, in both planes – left to right, and the transitions between boxes front to back – how it had a great presence without being overpowering, and how well it carried right out past 250 feet from the stage.”
The rig operated at medium-to-high SPL during the weekend for an estimated crowd of approximately 10,000 people. “We never saw a sign of a clip light or any signs of speaker stress,” Harrison says, noting the diversity of artists using the system, ranging from 3-piece bands to 25-piece orchestras, as well a choir.
“The tonal character of the system was considered excellent. I thought the SPL and clarity of the boxes was great, and when combined with the weight/size combo and the easy rigging, it goes up fast, and doesn’t disappoint. I’d definitely use it again.”

Introducing the KF740 3-Way Full Range Line Array Loudspeaker:
Now Available In Canada !!!!
EAW, a world leader in audio system solutions, debuts the KF740 Three-Way Full Range Line Array Loudspeaker; a high-output, extremely lightweight compact speaker module that capitalizes on EAW's modern engineering and manufacturing technology, resulting in EAW's next-generation line array. Engineered by the same Whitinsville, Massachusetts-based design team responsible for EAW's critically-acclaimed KF Series, the new KF740 line array system brings a new level of performance to modules of its size, having been optimized for the widest possible range of touring and fixed installation applications. The symmetrical design, large horn and spaced woofers provide exceptional pattern control while EAW Focusing and EAW Resolution software, both exclusive, proprietary technologies, further enhance system performance. The KF740 is perfect for applications of nearly any size and delivers output resembling the much larger KF760, but has the footprint and weight of the more diminutive KF730. Because of this optimum ratio of weight, size and output, the KF740 is the ideal solution for a wide variety of applications including touring sound, corporate A/V, sports arenas, houses of worship, performing arts centers, hotel ballrooms and clubs.
Like all KF Series loudspeakers, the KF740 delivers premium, high-output, 3-way performance, in a package that is extremely compact and easy to set up. Each module contains two HF compression drivers with 2.5-inch voice coils and two 8-inch MF transducers with 3-inch coils, all of which are integrated into a single horn that occupies the entire face of the enclosure. This allows for consistent 90-degree pattern control, even at frequencies down to 160Hz, as the MF frequencies are transitioned to a spaced array of four 10-inch LF transducers with 2.5-inch voice coils. Two of the LF transducers are mounted within the horn, and two are side-mounted, providing as much as 18dB of off-axis rejection. EAW Focusing, as provided by EAW's UX8800 DSP, easily and precisely transitions from one system subsection to another. Also, all magnet structures within the KF740 utilize neodymium magnets.
A full KF740 array provides seamless coverage, from directly below the array, to hundreds of feet in front. The vertical output can be tailored to match the requirements of any space by varying the splay at the rear of the enclosures as directed by EAW Resolution software. The resultant configuration repeatedly produces a continuous, coherent wave front of extended-range, high-resolution audio over the entire defined coverage area. And, unlike other line arrays, the KF740 features a smooth, uniform transition when the listener moves from on-axis to an off-axis position, thereby increasing the soundfield. Broadly applicable line sources can be constructed solely of KF740 modules. The versatile KF740 can also be integrated above KF730 modules or beneath KF760 modules to extend the reach of the range to any application imaginable. The KF740 has an unprecedented low-end response from a cabinet of its size; however, the impressive low frequency output and extension of the KF740 can be even further enhanced by the use of the complementary SB1002 flying subwoofer.
The truck-pack friendly KF740 is Made in the U.S.A. and is meticulously constructed for structural integrity, long life and impeccable sonic reproduction. The exterior-grade Baltic birch plywood enclosure, wear-resistant textured coating and powder-coated steel grille work to protect each module. The extruded structural aluminum rigging, precision quick-release rigging pins and Neutrik STX series NL8 connectors are ideal for touring applications.
“The KF740 represents a truly significant moment in loudspeaker design and technology. Jeffrey Cox, Kenton Forsythe, Nathan Butler and Jeff Rocha should be very proud of their work and the team," stated Graeme Stevenson, director of Production Audio Services in Autralia.
Eddie Mapp, FOH engineer for Evanescence / Stone Temple Pilots, echoed his sentiments: "With tremendous detail and punch the KF740 is the benchmark for which any system this size (and some) larger should strive for. Even, responsive, and honest. An incredible work of art and science”.
This outstanding new development from EAW’s legendary design team is now available in Canada!!!! Contact your local SF Marketing EAW sales representative to organize a demo.

Smaart v.7 Now Released!
What’s New in Smaart v7?
In short . . . Everything.
Smaart v7 is a completely new code base developed from the ground-up. By starting with a clean slate, we have been able to reconsider, revise and improve all areas of the program – from the program’s fundamental architecture through to the details of the control interface. Version 7 is a quantum leap for Smaart in both power and elegance.
However, the changes to Smaart extend far beyond the application itself. One of the most exciting new features of Smaart v7 is Rational Acoustics itself. We are the same people who have been developing and steering Smaart for the last 12 yrs as SIA Software Company within EAW. Now however, as Rational Acoustics, we are a small, independent company focused only on Smaart. This means we can make decisions that make sense for our software and our market. And we can focus full-time on providing the high level of support and development that have been the hallmark of the Smaart platform. In other words, Smaart v7.0 is just the start.
So, what’s new in Smaart v7?
Let’s take a look . . .

Smaart v7 (beta)
Top Pane: Live IR Middle Pane: 4x Live RTA
Bottom Pane: 4x Live Transfer Function
Property of Rational Acoustics LLC. ©2009. All Rights Reserved.
Multi-Channel, Multi-Platform, Multi-Mania:
Smaart v7 is inherently multi-channel and multi-platform, able to access modern multi-channel input devices and operate native in both Windows and Mac Operating Systems (including 32- and 64-bit versions). And as you can see from the screen capture above, v7 can run multiple, simultaneous Spectrum and Transfer Function Measurements. Smaart 7 is truly multi-maniacal.
Built From the Start to Make Use of Power:
If there is one thing that has remained “constant” over Smaart’s decade plus of evolution, it is the relentless expansion of the processing power, speed and memory in our personal computers. And with those comes the potential for greater measurement power and possibilities – if you can make use of it. From day one, the Smaart 7 code base was optimized to make use of the all power that modern processor configurations present, whether that be from one processor or eight. Your Smaart rig might not need to use all of your PC’s power right now, but if history is any indicator, you will.
New Program Architecture:
One of the most powerful aspects of the new Smaart v7 platform is its object-oriented program architecture. Effectively, the program is built of many individual code modules that are run as independent, inter-related programs (objects). Say what? For users, this means that you can run as many simultaneous single-channel (spectrum) and dual-channel (transfer function) measurement engines as your PC will allow. [The v7 screen captures in this document were all made on a dual-core, 2 GHz Mac Pro. For users running the measurement power equivalent of Smaart v6, a 1 GHz single core would certainly be sufficient.]
This new architecture also means that Smaart is ready for expanded application/interaction beyond the basic program itself. Remote GUIs (Graphic User Interfaces), real-time data export/sharing with other applications and the creation of plug-in versions are all now possible and already on the drawing board.

Enhanced Data Acquisition:
Smaart v7’s new data acquisition module now provides increased and improved access to the devices and signals in our system.
Features include:
- Unlimited input channels / devices
- Able to access multiple devices
- Able to access virtual devices
- ASIO, Wav and CoreAudio input
- Able to reference to internal sources
- Power calculation per input (SPL)
- Time Domain Filtering / Input Calibration
Simpler, Friendlier GUI:
Certainly, v7 has significantly expanded the measurement power of Smaart, but this does not mean that the user interface (GUI) needs to become dauntingly complex. In fact, to be manageable, the GUI necessarily needs to get cleaner, simpler and more streamlined as your measurement system gains complexity. What’s the use of power if it can’t be controlled? The hallmark of Smaart v7 operation is its elegantly focused user interface.
Much effort in v7 development was put in to reducing unnecessary UI clutter. Many of the dialog box-based controls that once populated Smaart’s interface have now been replaced with modern “point ‘n’ grab ‘n’ drag ‘n’ click” mouse-based controls. If you need to move a trace up or down, just grab it and drag it. If you need to change the dynamic range of your spectrograph, or the coherence blanking threshold for your transfer function trace, those controls are right on the plot. Of course the direct-enter dialog haven’t gone away - you can still get to them – but they have been moved off of the top level interface, and out of the way.
Of course the most crucial areas of Smaart v7’s development efforts lay in the heart of the beast itself: the new v7 measurement engines . . .
Smaart v7 Enhanced, Improved, Strengthened, Awesome-ized Measurement Engines:
All aspects of Smaart’s measurement engines were revisited, considered and reconsidered, and everywhere possible, improved. The resulting enhancements range from quite subtle, “under the hood” improvements to obvious quantum leaps in measurement power, stability, accuracy and ability.
REAL-TIME MODE: SPECTRUM ENGINE
The user can configure as many single-channel engines as they need, each with the ability to produce its own RTA and Spectrograph data.

RTA
- Improved fractional-octave banding for RTA and Spectrograph, including 1/48 th Octave
- Multi-channel input allows for simultaneous display of multiple individual RTAs - as well as “live averages” of active signals
- “Line-Over-Bands” view of RTA displays both raw and banded data
Spectrograph

- Improved color definition
- Scrollable 1000 (+) line history
- Real-time adjustable dynamic range
- Store and recall spectrographs
REAL-TIME MODE: TRANSFER FUNCTION ENGINE (Frequency Response):
• New MTW (Multi-Time Window) FFT provides better than 48 th Oct frequency resolution from 60 Hz up. (MTW takes the place of FPPO)
• Improved fractional-octave smoothing provides better trace readability
• New averaging algorithm greatly enhances trace stability
- Overload protection – TF average rejects data during input clip.
Multi-channel input allows for multiple, simultaneous transfer functions as well as the calculation of “live-averages” of those measurements
Groups of Transfer Function measurements can be configured for managing multi-channel system alignment
Live IR (Top data pane) shows the TF measurement in a linear IR view.
Live IR
• Window centered at the TF’s delay
• User-selectable FFT size up to 32k
• FIFO Averaging up to 8 Averages
TF Delay Tracking
When engaged, Delay Tracking automatically measures and adjusts the TF delay for every measurement cycle! Go ahead, move the mic, Smaart will track the delay change.
IMPULSE RESPONSE MODE
Smaart v7’s Impulse Response mode has been significantly expanded to include much of the functionality from our AcousticTools software package, with the intent of giving a user a robust and intuitive set of tools for making and analyzing Impulse Response measurements.

“Navigator” pane:
Full IR record in linear view for controlling Time Domain zooming
Time Domain Zoom views:
Ceux-ci montre des extraits de RI sous forme linéaire, logarithmique et ETC (« Energy Time curve »)
Frequency Domain view:
IR in Frequency Domain. (This feature
was incompletely implemented in v.6.)
Spectrograph:
Shows IR as Spectrograph, with on-screen adjustable dynamic range
IR can be filtered in real-time.
Here the IR is filtered with an Octave wide filter at 1 kHz
(Shown in all three panes.)
And this is just the beginning. Watch for additional impulse response analysis features to be slipstreamed into Smaart 7 over the next year in the course of normal maintenance updates.

So there you have it. Smaart v.7: New code base, modern object-oriented architecture, enhanced data acquisition, improved GUI, awesome-ized measurement engines, and brand new features like delay tracking. And best of all, it is now backed by Rational Acoustics, a dedicated, independent company focused solely on the development and support of Smaart. It’s not just the next version of the Smaart you knew, it’s the beginning of the Smaart you deserve.

Shure Unveils Beta 27 Side-address Condenser Microphone
Industry's Only Side-Address Supercardioid Condenser Microphone
Designed
For Professional Sound Reinforcement
NILES, IL,March 25, 2010 — Shure Incorporated today announced the introduction of the latest addition to its line of precision-engineered Beta microphones, the side-address, supercardioid Beta 27. The new Beta 27 delivers the unmatched sound quality and durability that have made Shure microphones invaluable for more than 80 years of stage performance and studio recording around the world.
The Beta 27 is unique in the industry as the only side-address, supercardioid condenser microphone designed for professional sound reinforcement. It was developed in response to audio engineers' desire for a condenser mic that offers better isolation of the sound source.
"Live acts have been using cardioid large diaphragm condenser mics for years, on drum overhead and guitar/bass cabinets," says Chad Wiggins, Shure's Category Manager for Wired Products. "But for some big stages, engineers want more focus and better isolation of the sound source. That's what the Beta 27 offers. Plus, it's durable and it travels light -- that's a must for touring acts."
The Beta 27's supercardioid polar pattern targets the sound source like no other side-address microphone available for fine detail in demanding acoustic environments. With its large diaphragm and extremely low self-noise, the Beta 27 defines sound quality and high-caliber performance.
"Stage and studio are converging," adds Wiggins. "While the Beta 27 can handle multiple uses for studio recording projects, many acts nowadays are recording their live shows, and they want to put studio condensers on their stage. But, other microphones that are currently available pick up more splash and stage wash than the engineer might want. The Beta 27 is the answer.”
Like the other precision-engineered mics in Shure's Beta line, the Beta 27 is crafted for superior focus of sound reproduction and high gain-before-feedback. Ideal for professional sound engineers and performers who demand the ultimate in reliability, Beta 27 redefines control for essential, expert sound reinforcement in a wide variety of demanding applications and changing environments.
“It is the perfect complement to the SM57 as a second guitar mic,” says Matt West, Front of House engineer for Phoenix, Motörhead, The Cure, Snoop Dogg, and many others. “It is very full bodied and doesn't really require a great deal of hacking in the top end region to get the warmth out of a guitar. It is there already. I would be happy to permanently place it in my channel list for any band that I work with.”
Unique features of the Beta 27 include:
- Supercardioid polar pattern specifically targets the sound source consistently with greatly minimized bleed from off-axis sound sources.
- Tailored for superior transient response from a low-mass, one inch externally-biased, ultra-thin 24 Karat gold-layered Mylar ® diaphragm.

The AirTools 2m signal path is a collection of precision DSP tools including filtering, de-essing, automatic gain control, EQ, 4-band compressing, limiting and soft clipping. In one of many applications the 2m is ideal for simulating air chain processing on headphone cue sends – an elegant alternative to piecemeal solutions or recycled air chain processors engineers often turn to.
User settings saved into any of 50 preset memory locations may be recalled via front panel, optional hardware remote, 2m Windows® software, on board Event Scheduler, or IP-based automation commands. Custom programming is simple with 16 factory presets to draw from including settings for music formats, podcasting and mastering. The outstanding audio performance and generous feature set qualify the 2m for satellite uplink and ingest service. Advanced filtering, dynamics processing, and clipper modules assure predictable, consistent audio for these mission-critical applications. When located remotely the 2m can be accessed via IP.
Stereo image enhancement, acoustic environment simulator, and pre-emphasis filtering make the new AirTools offering a cost-effective choice for HD broadcast, Internet streaming, podcasting, and smaller-market on-air processing. Noise and tone generators provide for precise setup. Input failover automatically switches to an alternate source if the primary fails. These same features make the 2m attractive to TV engineers for in-ear monitoring, simultaneous audio programming, satellite audio, production, and distribution to local cable providers.
“The AirTools Multiband Processor 2m helps broadcasters manage their audio content in many different ways,” stated Paul Roberts, Symetrix Director of Sales and Marketing. “It gives engineers an affordable collection of useful tools to deliver listener-perceived improvements in tone, intelligibility and intensity throughout their broadcast facilities.”
The AirTools 2m boasts top shelf performance specs – from ultra-low latency to super-wide dynamic range. AES digital and analog audio connectors are XLR. Sync is to internal clock or external word or AES sources. Its 4 modes of operation – stereo, mono, MS encode, and MS decode – make it useful for recording and production tasks as well as broadcast.
The AirTools Multiband Processor 2m is currently available in Canada through SF Marketing Inc. . A free, without registration, download of the application software is found at www.AirToolsAudio.com.

Shure Introduces PSM® 900 Personal Moniter System
ANAHEIM, CA and NILES, IL, JANUARY 14, 2010 – Shure Incorporated reaffirmed its position as a worldwide leader in professional audio electronics by bringing personal monitor audio quality to a new level. The groundbreaking new PSM® 900 Wireless Personal Monitor System sets a new category standard by delivering an unprecedented combination of audio quality and RF performance to the most demanding professional events, installations, and tours.
"For well over a decade, Shure has been at the center of live performance with innovative wireless products that have allowed artists and performers to hear every nuance of their efforts while moving freely around the stage,” said Mark Humrichouser, General Manager of the Americas Business Unit for Shure. “With the PSM 900, we’ve built upon these innovations to create a new class of personal monitor, precision-engineered to deliver superior audio within a system that’s effortless to set up and unmatched in reliability. It’s an exceptional product with all of the hallmarks of Shure’s sound, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it to market.”
At the heart of the PSM 900 system are a rugged, all-metal, ultra-thin wireless bodypack receiver (P9R) and a half-rack single wireless transmitter (P9T). The PSM 900 also will be available with Shure’s newly-introduced SE425 Sound Isolating™ Earphones, which feature enhanced sound signatures and premium dual speaker technology in a small, lightweight design. Unlike earlier SE models, the SE425 features a unique, detachable cable and formable wire at the earpiece giving performers accurate sound and a secure fit.
The new PSM 900 Personal Monitor System combines the very best in features and performance including:
Superior, Accurate Audio Quality. Using Shure’s patented Audio Reference Companding – a more efficient process for compressing audio signals prior to transmission – and advanced digital stereo encoding, the PSM 900 delivers a more natural sound with less noise and greater dynamic range than competitive wireless audio systems. The result is a lower noise floor and crisp, clear sound at all audio levels. The PSM 900 provides tight, controlled bass response and unparalleled stereo separation.
Exceptional RF Performance. The PSM 900 takes Shure’s reputation for RF performance and reliability to a new level. Advanced technologies provide robust performance in difficult RF environments. The PSM 900 receiver features the same front-end filter as Shure’s UHF-R® Wireless System, as well as Active RF Gain Control that automatically reduces receiver sensitivity when an overload of RF signal is detected. The PSM 900 provides the most stable RF performance of any monitoring system on the market.
Compact, Ultra-thin Bodypack. The P9R is the thinnest personal monitor bodypack available, yet it doesn’t compromise features for form. For maximum flexibility, the PSM 900 includes CueMode, a patent-pending feature that allows users to audition up to 20 different monitor mixes on a single bodypack at the touch of a button. Any P9R can be used in CueMode so that monitor engineers can quickly hear each performer’s mix, without the need for any additional equipment. The all-metal P9R is also rugged enough to withstand the abuse of nightly performances but packs advanced features like MixMode® technology, which allows performers to easily set their own levels and create the mix they want without affecting others on stage.
Simple User Interface. Even the most demanding professional applications requiring multiple RF channels witness vastly improved efficiencies through a near effortless set-up. Utilizing Scan and Sync technology, audio engineers can easily analyze the RF environment for interference and identify available compatible frequencies within seconds. In addition, the dedicated RF Mute feature gives users the ability to set up audio and RF parameters without transmitting.
With the PSM 900 personal monitor, audio has never sounded so good and required so little effort. “The audio quality of the PSM 900 system is remarkable!” raved Earl Neal, monitor engineer for country superstar Toby Keith. “The use of colors in the LEDs makes the system easy to read at-a-glance, and I really like the construction of the transmitter and pack. I can't wait to use a rack of these on tour.”
The PSM 900 will ship in early to mid 2010. The systems will be available with and without premium Sound Isolating Earphones. The P9R wireless bodypack receiver and P9T wireless transmitter are available as separate.
The PSM 900 carries a two-year limited warranty.
