SFM visited Genelec’s winter NAMM booth to learn more about their showcased product: the SAM S360 studio monitor. The high-SPL two-way active loudspeaker is perfect for applications that require main monitor performance in a compact package. It is the ideal choice for demanding film, post and music production, and in combination with a subwoofer, the S360 satisfies the demands of EDM playback or Dolby film mixing even in rooms where the listening distance exceeds 10 metres (33 feet).
Part of the Smart Active Monitor Range, the S360 integrates tightly with Genelec’s loudspeaker manager software, GLM. The integration ensures that the loudspeaker will automatically align and calibrate itself to any acoustic space, correcting problems with frequency response, time of flight from the speaker to a listening location and any difference in SPL levels that the loudspeakers might be producing. The S360 can therefore be incorporated into a system configurable from simple stereo to large, immersive formats of 40 channels and more.
An MDF cabinet, the S360 also features an enhanced 10″ high efficiency woofer and a 1″ titanium compression tweeter which feeds through a directivity control wave guide. The very wide and deep wave guide which reduces diffraction and produces a directive signal that delivers precision and clarity, even when you’re monitoring at high SPL levels. To go loud is one thing, but to be loud with such precision and proper reference quality is a challenge that the S360 uniquely overcomes.
In an effort to ensure the S360 remains compact in design, two generous sized down-firing reflect ports are located on the underside of the speaker beneath an innovative Iso-Plate. The design feature helps with low frequency extension and helps support high-SPL capability.
The S360 also supports versatile mounting options whether it be stand, ceiling, wall, truss or socket mounted.
